About Common Ground

Common Ground is a website for parents, whānau and friends – to recognise and understand the difficult situations that young people go through in their lives, and understand the support system a young person might have around them. Being a support person for a distressed teenager or a young person who is experiencing a mental illness can be a difficult road without any support around you.

Common Ground houses advice and information for the support network of a young person to help them recognise and understand the hard times young people can go through, as well as identify early stages of possible mental illness. The website provides easy access to advice, helplines, local communities and information on the mental health system in New Zealand.

With understanding and early action we are able to support young people to manage hard times and enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing.

On the site parents, whānau and friends can find:

  • Information on what a support system is, and to know that you’re not alone
  • Videos portraying difficult situations a young person and their support network can go through
  • An advice blog providing insight and support from our professional panel
  • Tips on how to work with the mental health system in New Zealand, and what to expect
  • Tips on ways to have positive conversations with the young people in your life, to build trust and a safe place to talk about their worries
  • Information on how to keep well and take care of yourself while supporting a loved one
  • Youthline Helpline, free text number and email to speak to someone right away when you need advice, support, or just someone to talk to
  • The Mental Health Foundation’s Resource and Information Services to ask questions via phone or live chat about:
    • The mental health system
    • What communities are in their areas that can give support
    • As well as point you in the right direction for any free resources or materials on mental health and mental illness.
  • The ability to order a free support pack of information from Skylight, to be personalised to your needs and mailed right to your door.

Common Ground is a collaborative initiative, which has been produced by the Mental Health Foundation, Skylight, and Youthline, with support from Curative, and innovate change. Common Ground is an initiative of the Prime Minister’s Youth Mental Health Project.
